Evelyn Prentice is a respected wife of a high-profile New York attorney. Despite her status and the prestige she enjoys, she often feels neglected and bored. When she becomes involved with an unscrupulous womanizing poet, she seeks out his attention, which she craves. Eventually, she finds herself a victim of blackmail and becomes embroiled in the murder of a man who was accused of the crime.
When another woman is accused of the same crime, Evelyn begs her husband to defend her. Despite her pleas for help, he refuses to do so, leaving her alone and vulnerable to further harm. In a desperate attempt to protect herself, she decides to take matters into her own hands and kills the accuser.
As the investigation into the murder begins, Evelyn realizes that she has made a grave mistake. She knows that she must turn herself in to authorities and face the consequences of her actions, but she also knows that she cannot let go of the love and support of her husband. With a heavy heart, she makes the difficult decision to turn herself in, hoping that her husband will still have compassion for her even after all that she has done.
