Bill Saunders, a troubled ex-soldier, kills a man in a postwar London pub brawl. Fleeing the scene, he hides out in the apartment of lonely nurse Jane Wharton. Later, despite her initial reservations about his violent nature, Jane becomes involved with Bill and agrees to help him reform. She helps him get a job driving a medical supplies truck. However, Harry Carter, a notorious gangster who witnessed the killing, sees an opportunity to exploit Bill's talents for his own criminal activities.
