The Eloquent Peasant is a classic text from the ancient Egyptian literary tradition, dating back to the Middle Kingdom period of Egyptian literature. It is a unique blend of a morality play and folk tale, with events taking place between 2160 and 2025 BC.
The story begins with Khun-anup, a peasant, and his donkey stumbling upon the lands of the noble Rensi. The peasant’s possessions are confiscated, and he is wrongfully accused of theft. In an attempt to prove his innocence, he appeals to the noble Rensi.
Rensi, who is deeply impressed by the peasant’s eloquence, reports his astonishing discovery to the king. The king, however, delays judgment so that he can hear more of the peasant’s eloquence. This leads to an intriguing twist in the narrative, as the king becomes increasingly intrigued by the peasant’s words.
As the story progresses, we see how the peasant uses his rhetorical skills to defend himself against accusations and make his case even stronger. He makes nine petitions, each one more convincing than the last, until finally, his goods are returned to him.
The Eloquent Peasant is not only a fascinating historical document but also a masterpiece of storytelling. Its combination of morality play and folk tale has stood the test of time and continues to captivate readers today.
