In the heart of New York's Garment District, Walter Mitchell runs Roxton Fashions, a sweatshop that employs hundreds of workers. The owners are determined to keep the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) out of their shop, and they refuse to negotiate with the union. Walter's partner, Lee J. Cobb, is not in agreement with his boss. He wants the workers to have a living wage, but Walter is unwilling to compromise. When Lee dies in an accident, Walter becomes even more determined to keep the union out of their shop. Kerwin Mathews plays Alan, Walter's son who returns to New York after a long absence. Alan has never understood his father's anger towards the union, but he does understand the workers' plight. He sympathizes with them and wants to help them fight for a better life. As the union organizes protests and demonstrations in the district, Walter and his workers become increasingly hostile towards the union. Walter even hires thugs to intimidate the workers and prevent them from joining the union. Alan, however, sees the situation differently. He meets with the union organizers and talks to the workers about their rights and how they can improve their lives. He convinces them to join the union, and the workers begin to feel empowered and hopeful. The tension between Walter and Alan escalates, and Walter threatens to shut down the shop if the union continues to protest. But Alan refuses to back down, and he begins to speak out against the sweatshop conditions and the owner's anti-union stance. As the union organizers continue to work with the workers, Walter's business begins to suffer. His customers start to boycott his products, and he realizes that the union is making him look bad. He decides to make a deal with the union, offering a living wage and other benefits for the workers. The union celebrates their victory, and the workers are grateful for the support they received from Alan and the union organizers. Walter also learns a valuable lesson about standing up for what is right and working together for a common goal.
