The film depicts the historical event of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who led a military campaign in 1860, known as the Expedition of the Thousand. He conquered Sicily and Naples. After the Bourbon monarchy left Southern Italy, he supported Victor Emmanuel II, who achieved lasting unification under the House of Savoy. Roberto Rossellini expressed his pride in this film, stating it was more significant than any other film he had ever made.
