William Gridley, a US citizen, arrives in London and rents part of Carly Hardwicke's house, immediately falling in love with her. However, he is unaware that many people believe she murdered her husband. His boss, the American ambassador, knows about this and doesn't take it lightly.
Carly, being an American herself, saves her job by introducing Gridley to the ambassador, who is instantly smitten and promises to help her. When a Scotland Yard detective arrives, looking for answers, they agree to help him. But as things get more complicated, the comedic twists begin to unfold.
