Steve and Susan Ireland, two newlyweds, are about to celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary by reenacting their first date. However, when Susan's mother interrupts the moment, she injures herself. Steve is left to take care of her while he meets an old flame in the elevator. To make matters worse, Susan's mother takes the opportunity to break up their marriage, convincing Susan that Steve is cheating on her and leading her to file for divorce.
In a desperate attempt to save his marriage, Steve has one solution: pretending he is insane. He decides to go to a psychiatrist and undergo treatment to prove his insanity. With the help of his therapist, Steve convinces everyone around him that he is delusional and unfit for marriage.
Susan, however, is not convinced by Steve's lies. She believes that he is just trying to escape responsibility for his actions. Feeling betrayed and hurt, Susan confronts Steve about his deception and demands an explanation.
As the situation grows more complicated, both Steve and Susan begin to question whether or not they should continue with their marriage. They realize that their love may be stronger than their fear of being seen as crazy or unfit. With the support of their friends and family, they decide to face their fears and rebuild their relationship together.
