Stephen Lowry, a heartbroken widower in Victorian London, is struggling to cope with his grief. His housemaid, Lily, knows about the poisoning of his wife and is happy to use this information to improve her position in the household and ensure she stays close to Stephen. As his own prospects improve with a business partnership and a romance more of his own class, Stephen decides that Lily must go. Unfortunately for him, his first attempt gives her even more of a hold over him.
Stephen's friend John, who is also in love with Lily, tries to help him by offering to take care of her until he can find a new housekeeper. However, John's attempts to help are not successful, and Lily continues to manipulate Stephen's emotions and keep him tied to her.
As time passes, Stephen's financial situation worsens, and he becomes increasingly desperate to find a way out of his predicament. He begins to contemplate suicide, but ultimately decides to seek help from his friend John. Together, they devise a plan to get Lily out of their lives once and for all.
Stephen and John set up a fake marriage between them and Lily, hoping that this would make it difficult for Lily to continue manipulating Stephen's emotions. They also hire a hitman to kill Lily, but before he can carry out the plan, John accidentally shoots himself instead.
Stephen is left devastated and heartbroken, realizing that he has lost everything he ever loved. He vows never to let anyone manipulate his emotions again and to focus on finding happiness in other ways. The film ends with Stephen looking back at his life, filled with regret and sadness, as he walks away from his former life behind him.
