In 1990, a single man named David (played by Brian Landis Folkins) is looking for an escape from the daily drudgery of taking care of his elderly mother (played by Kathleen Brady). In an attempt to find companionship and friendship, he uses a video dating service. While browsing through the options, he stumbles upon a strange VHS tape called Rent-A-Pal, hosted by the charming and charismatic Andy (Wil Wheaton).
David is immediately drawn to Andy's warmth and kindness, and they strike up a conversation over the phone. As they chat, David learns that Andy is willing to rent out his apartment for him, provided he pays a small fee. However, this comes at a steep cost, and David struggles to afford it. Despite his financial constraints, David agrees to the arrangement, hoping that the experience will help him feel less burdened by his mother's caregiving responsibilities.
As they spend time together, David begins to develop feelings for Andy, who reciprocates these emotions. They share many laughs and moments of companionship, but David also realizes that their relationship is not without its challenges.
