An American photographer, on assignment in an isolated Icelandic community, finds himself entangled with an enigmatic European couple. The couple, a wealthy couple named Mr. and Mrs. Smith, are living the life of a wealthy couple in their luxurious home.
The Smiths invite the photographer to join them for dinner, and the photographer is immediately struck by the couple's wealth and elegance. As they sit at the table, the photographer can't help but notice the couple's apparent disdain for the local people.
Despite the photographer's attempts to engage the couple in conversation, they seem uninterested in his questions or comments. The photographer begins to feel uncomfortable and withdrawn, feeling like an outsider in their world.
As the night wears on, the photographer becomes increasingly frustrated with the couple's behavior. He begins to suspect that they are not as wealthy and refined as they seem. The more he observes them, the more he feels like they are hiding something from him.
One evening, while the couple is out on a boat, the photographer follows them. He sees them talking about a mysterious woman who has been hanging around their neighborhood. The woman seems to be a local resident, but she seems to have a secretive past.
The next day, the photographer returns to the house to continue his work. But when he goes to the kitchen, he finds the Smiths nowhere to be found. They have vanished into thin air.
The photographer searches the house and grounds frantically, but he can find no trace of the couple. He calls the police and reports the disappearance, but there is still no information about what happened to Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Feeling desperate, the photographer decides to leave town and return to America. On his way back, he stops off at a small village near the border with Iceland. There he meets a local woman who tells him about a mysterious man who had recently disappeared from the area.
The photographer realizes that the mysterious man may be the same person who has been hanging around the Smiths' neighborhood. He decides to return to Iceland and try to find the Smiths again.
Upon arriving in Iceland, the photographer discovers that the Smiths' mansion is now abandoned and in ruins. He searches the grounds frantically, but he cannot find any signs of the couple.
Feeling hopeless, the photographer returns to the village where he met the local woman. She tells him that the mysterious man was never seen again, but she does know where he might be.
The photographer follows her directions and eventually finds the man. He is lying in a field, surrounded by rocks and boulders. The man looks up at the photographer and smiles weakly.
"You must be the American photographer," he says. "I am sorry for everything I have done."
The photographer is shocked and confused by the man's words. He asks him why he did all this, but the man only shakes his head and says nothing.
The photographer decides to leave the man alone and head back to his own country. As he walks away, he hears a faint whisper behind him.
"Thank you," the man says softly. "For helping me."
The photographer turns around and sees the man smiling once more, walking away into the distance.
