Can I Get a Witness? is a science fiction novel that explores the consequences of an anthropogenic collapse. The world, which is nearing its end due to overpopulation and environmental degradation, has banned technological advancements and mandates people to live until they reach the age of 50.
The protagonist, Ellie, is a mother who lives with her teenage daughter, Kiah, who is starting her first day as a Documenter. Ellie uses her artistic talents to create animations depicting the dying ceremonies, as printing and photography have been banned in this new world order.
Kiah is paired with Daniel, a young man who performs the contractual elements of each person's end-of-life ceremony. He sets up the packages when the time comes and performs the burials. However, his new coworker, who is struggling to handle the emotional impacts of the job, is having a hard time adjusting to their new reality.
As the novel progresses, we see how these two individuals grapple with the challenges of their new world, including the loss of their loved ones and the limitations imposed on them by society. Through their experiences, we are reminded of the importance of family and the value of artistic expression in the face of adversity.
