Nikolaï was born without a family, and has been in foster care since. He dreams of finding a place to call his own, but he knows that the odds are stacked against him. Despite this, he is determined to make a life for himself. One day, Nikolaï meets Camille, an older girl with a mysterious past. She seems like she's had her struggles too, and they strike up a conversation about their shared experiences. As they talk, Nikolaï realizes that Camille is not as bad as she seems. She is wise and kind, and seems to have a soft spot for children. Nikolaï decides to ask Camille to be his partner in crime—a plan that involves running away from home and starting a new life together. They look around nervously, but there's nothing there. Then, just as they are about to go to sleep, a figure emerges from the darkness. It's a man, dressed in black, with a mask covering his face. He approaches them slowly, and Nikolaï feels a chill run down his spine. Camille notices the stranger too, and they both freeze in fear. The man speaks in a low voice, telling them that he wants to help them. He offers to take them back to their home, but only if they promise to stay quiet and do what he asks. Nikolaï and Camille hesitate for a moment, but eventually agree. They follow the man through the forest, and when they reach their home, the stranger disappears into the darkness. Back at home, Nikolaï and Camille try to process what happened. They realize that they don't know who the man was, or why he wanted to help them. But they also realize that they don't want to be alone anymore. They need each other, and they need to protect themselves from whatever is out there in the forest. Soon after, Nikolaï and Camille decide to stay together, and start their own little community in the woods. They build a small house, and start growing crops and hunting animals. They spend their days exploring the forest, learning about nature, and growing closer as friends. In time, Nikolaï begins to develop a sense of responsibility for his new family. He realizes that he needs to take care of them, just as he would any other child. He also learns to trust his instincts, and he starts to rely on Camille for guidance. As they grow stronger together, they become more confident in their abilities. They start to dream of a future together, one where they can build a better life for themselves. And as they do, they realize that they may have found something more than just a temporary fix: a real family.
