Dean Barry, a 23-year-old American sailor, lands in Naples in 1944. He quickly develops feelings for the local woman Lucia, with whom he has a son. However, Dean is forced to leave them due to his military service. After returning from the war, Dean finds that Naples has changed significantly, and he must navigate through the new city while trying to reconnect with Lucia and their son.
