Luis, an older middle-aged man, travels from Barcelona to Segovia to bury his mother's remains. He is staying with his aunt Pilar in her old house where he spent his summer of 1936 with her. Luis meets his cousin Angelica, who was his first love, living on the first floor with her husband and daughter. They reminisce about their childhood growing up during the Spanish Civil War, which was intertwined with the present.
