John Muller, a medical school dropout and brilliant conman, plots a holdup that goes slightly awry. He encounters vindictive gambler Rocky Stansyck in the process. On the brink of his downfall, he stumbles upon a lucky opportunity to assume an impenetrable new identity as psychiatrist Victor Bartok. However, irony piles on as Muller finds it's out of the frying pan, into the fire.
